Mr Sole Abode
I'm going to be honest 85% of me enjoyed the show while 15% left me feeling negatively critical!

The opening grabbed me, it had some suspense just looking at the light, I wanted to know what happened next and Leo Kay demonstrated some great physicallity lying in the fridge as the door the fridge closed, he changed it so it produced a slide image that didn't feel like a slide image. That was strong, and when he talked about cooking vegatables there was a profound wit to it then text wise after I found to be quite incomprehensible, structurally it felt quite clumpy, and also very sectioned into parts. I would personally have benifited more if the text was more fluid, and there was less writing in it, and possibly more physicallity in it. In his defense I would definately say that his delivery was very good, and there were some prophicies in there that made the character very interesting.

I definately loved the visuals particularly the fridge, and the way it was compact with all the necesities in there, that brought a smile to my face. The sleeping bag scene was used really effectively but
there were sky scapers on the back of the table, more lighting was needed on that to enhance the visual, the way he moved it and gave it a story through his monologue was really effective. The use of music was extremely charming as well, and enhanced the dignity of the character.

I'm glad I attended the post talk show, I usually hate them in principle but I managed to catch things that I missed, I surprised with how little I picked up while watching the show. It was an intelligent piece of theatre, but I just wasn't in that mindset, I've not read the book that inspired the piece, I have an idea of Licklater's work, I didn't get on very well with a 'Scanner Darkly' unfortanately but it was another film that he was influenced. It got well deserved praise and if I link the 85% with the 15% I should have a higher appreciation of the work!

RE: Mr Sole Abode
What a character this actor-director partnership has created and what a clean performance from Leo Kay. Think Berkoff but cuddly. It’s always exciting to see an actor able to switch been one stage moment to the next with total vocal control and the moments of direct address come as sheer magic. Fourth wall, who needs it? And who are we (as audience)? Where are we? And does it matter... when we have a subtly rendered portrait of a man stunted by his excessive morality or his own lack of ambition. In practice the theatricality of the staging heightens the degree to which we engage with Sole. The less real it is the more real it is. It made me want to listen to homeless people to hear who they could be. And after that it made me want to encourage young people with pointless hobbies because one day those hobbies could be marketable. Maybe. This was pathos cut with humour and it was just beautiful enough.
