Writers Block by Cheryl Martin "Have you ever had writers block? I’m assuming you have, the amount of time you’ve been writing and the amount of stuff you’ve written, you MUST have done? I’ve got this brief to write a poem....I’ve mind mapped and mind dumped and done a million other things with my mind all to no avail. What did you do to get over your block?" Since I've been writing for a living for sixteen years, I have to make myself get over it if I get blocked. This is what I told this writer:
When I'm really stuck I do this exercise -- Think of a word [whatever your subject is, usually] Then think of: 1 A place that reminds you of the word. describe it. be really specific 2 A time you think of. Include time of day, time of year, season. be really specific with all these answers 3 A colour [or three]. Example -- pink like the inside of a baby's lung. Make people see it. 4 A smell -- again, be specific. Exactly what is the smell -- sort of what would your word smell like if it had a smell, or what smell do you associate with it 5 A touch -- something you can touch, some texture. Again, be specific -- is it like stepping on shards of broken glass when you've been running through a soft grass field? Make us feel it. 6 A sound -- what would your word sound like if it had a sound? What sound do you associate with it? 7 An emotion -- how do you feel when you think about it? And not just happy or sad -- elated like what? Dejected like what? Be specific. Jumble up the order of your answers. Write them down at random. Look at the pattern they make. Then re-write. You might have a poem. Try it. Good luck!
