The 12 companies involved in Contacting The World 2008 are delivering a blockbuster diary of workshops. There's no excuse for not being in Liverpool that week. Here's how to join in: Sunday 27th July Bare Feet, Zambia 10am & 2pm Hips and Groins A workshop with movement and music from this explosive young company from Lusaka. Bare Feet make physical, comic and inventive theatre, frequently with a social or political angle. It utilises the many tools available including dance, mime, mask and music wrapped in a bold and lively design. One element of Bare Feet is the influence of tribal ceremonies and traditional Zambian rituals as a source of inspiration and communication. ___________________________________________________________________ Other Side of the Mirror, Poland 12pm 1.Me and you in the space A series of etudes and improvisations with bamboo sticks. 4pm 2.Me and you in the space A workshop working with a partner, with your own body and with the space. The Other Side of the Mirror consists of young artists at the beginning of their artistic and professional road of life. They specialise in both outdoor and indoor performance spectacles. ___________________________________________________________________ Monday 28th July Creative Arts Team Youth Theatre, USA 10am 1.Improvisation Have fun with improvisation, exploring spontaneity and creativity ‘in the moment’. 2pm 2.Devising A collaborative playmaking technique CAT Youth Theatre creates original devised productions from the ideas of the young people who are its members. The emphasis is on empowerment through participation and the double ownership, of the group and group ethos, and of the material it produces and presents. ___________________________________________________________________ Phakama, London 12pm & 4pm Give and gain (The Phakama methodology)     The Phakama team of artists will take the participating group through its methodology enabling all involved to contribute to the creative process. Using multidisciplinary art forms, Phakama will share some of the techniques used to create its CTW production. Project Phakama is committed to the practice of cultural exchange and the celebration of a shared experience by promoting a participant led and non hierarchical artistic philosophy. ___________________________________________________________________ Tuesday 29th July Evam Youth Forum, India 10am & 2pm Looking for Rhythm A workshop exploring the use of rhythm in theatre.  Find out how to play around with actions and simple beats, breaking down everything you do on stage into a rhythmic pattern.   Using rhythm as a basis for communication, movement, character improvisation and memory, this innovative company will show how rhythm is use in their process. Formed by the Company Theatre in 2006, Evam Youth Forum seeks to bring together talented, committed and hard-working young artistes and provide them with opportunities and a platform to explore their art further and produce exciting new theatre.  Based in Mumbai, the Forum hopes to develop a network of artists from all over India. ___________________________________________________________________   Tiyatro 0.2, Turkey 12pm & 4pm Movements in the Dark A workshop exploring how the use of personal material can be represented in black light theatre in performance The participants look at daily things in their possession. They try to recognize the things which we use everyday. How to smell. How to sound. How to feel etc. The participants’ experience will then be transformed by the use of black lighting.  The workshop will be followed by a discussion and a video. Tiyatro 0.2 is a young and alternative theatre group which was founded in 2005. The name of the group is derived from the statistical probability of becoming a successful theatre company in Turkey (0.2%). Tiyatro 0.2 strives to interest new audiences by performing in places where people will take notice including bars, toilets, jungles and streets. ___________________________________________________________________ Wednesday 30th July Al Harah, Palestine 10am & 2pm Palestinian young people’s theatre A practical and discussion session on how Al Harah make theatre and the obstacles they face by making theatre in Palestine.  Al Harah Theatre Gang is part of Al Harah Theatre in Beit Jala.  It aims to produce theatre that is well crafted, moving, challenging yet accessible and, essentially honest. Al Harah Theatre is currently developing the first school of theatre in Palestine. ___________________________________________________________________ Positive Impact, Liverpool 12pm & 4pm Musical Theatre A workshop exploring Positive Impact’s performance style, showing how music, dance and song can be used in musical theatre. Positive Impact is a creative and innovative performing arts organisation and production company which primarily works with young people from black and minority backgrounds in Liverpool. It currently has a thriving youth theatre, offering training in all aspects of performing/creative arts as well as formal accreditation in the form of the Arts Award. ___________________________________________________________________ Thursday 31st July Afro Reggae, Brazil 10am & 2pm Body language to the spoken word A workshop based on the importance of the body movement as a language and communication tool. For Afro Reggae the body is an instrument that the performer uses to transmit spoken word to the audience.  This workshop will be based not only on spoken word but also on the importance of the body – to make the public “read what isn’t said”. Afro Reggae Cultural Group work with young people who come from some of Rio de Janeiro's most excluded favelas. The theatre company began life using theatre as an awareness raising tool, specifically on matters relating to health. It is now widely recognised as one of the world’s most exciting and successful cultural and social movements working with young people. ___________________________________________________________________ Space 3, Manchester 12pm & 4pm For Sale What do you buy and sell on a daily basis? Are they all physical objects? What part do our emotions and instincts play in this giant marketplace we inhabit? Come and explore the themes of the ‘Buy:Sell’, as Space 3 give you a hands-on experience of their methods. These include task-based improvisation, building characters from archetypes and their unique, diverse take on movement and sound. Space 3 is a new company formed out of a fusion of young people who have been involved in a number of projects at Contact over the last few years. It aims to bring together the diverse cultures and backgrounds of the company to create a fusion of art forms and performance styles to challenge the traditional notions of theatre making. ___________________________________________________________________ Friday 1st August Aarohan Theatre, Nepal 12pm   1.Cultural Dance Form A traditional dance workshop in which Aarohan will teach and demonstrate typical traditional dances of Kathmandu Valley. 4pm 2.Kachahari Theatre Aarohan have adopted forum theatre to suit its own our culture and have been practicing it for a decade. This workshop will demonstrate the theatre techniques of Kachahari. The Gurukul School as part of Aarohan theatre has been in existence since 1982 in Kathmandu. Nepal is a theatre of colours, rituals, and folklore. Buddhist, Hindu, and indigenous rituals constantly provide energy for the stage. ___________________________________________________________________  Die Zwiefachen, Germany 10am & 2pm “a way” In this workshop Die Zwiefachen will develop short scenes based on the way it has been working throughout the entire nine months of the project “a way”: With choreographed performances and movement work it will combine motifs from Homer’s Odyssey with stories based on the participants’ personal experiences in the workshop. Thus the workshop will mirror “in miniature” the work process and the structure of the actual performance.  DIE ZWIEFACHEN is the youth theatre group of the Schaubühne (Berlin).
