Afro Reggae Cultural Group works with young people who come from some of Rio deJaneiro's most excluded favelas. There are 750 favelas in the city housing two million people who are denied basic rights to adequate housing, health and education.
Afro Reggae Cultural Group has been working in these communities since 1993 when it began to offer classes in Vigario Geral in the aftermath of a massacre in which 21 innocent civilians were killed by a police "death squad".
Afro Reggae now operates more than 60 different projects, with the theatre project one of the strongest initiatives to come out of Vigario Geral. The theatre company began life as a group that used theatre as an awareness raising tool, specifically on matters relating to health. Theatre work has now developed and is now used as a process with which to experiment with various possibilities.
