The Lastmaker

This is the last ever production by legendary American performance group
Goat Island, and their visit to Contact marks the company’s final tour.
It’s a case of miss it and (genuinely) miss out.
Founded in 1987, Goat Island are classed as one of the most important theatre groups of our time. Following over 20 years of land-mark work, they have announced their decision to gracefully disband at the end of the tour of this - their ninth and final production.
The Lastmaker takes its inspiration from architecture. Using a highly unusual layout, the audience are seated at opposite sides of an intimate square stage and taken on a historical and architectural journey. This journey traverses 2000 years and 3000 miles, picking up stand-up comedy and Franciscan Friars along the way.
Goat Island have always conceived of their performance spaces architecturally. In their words: “We do not perform in theatres. We perform in structures of space”. Their work has shaped and influenced dance and theatre practice for the last 20 years, and has always left a lasting impact on its audiences.
The Lastmaker recapitulates the concerns of their esteemed history and will provide a very fitting conclusion to Goat Island’s story – a journey from the intellectual to the emotional, within a restrained structure, and with lasting resonance.
