Use Blue For Night is a collaboration between Forced Entertainment’s Cathy Naden, Contact Young Actor’s Company and lighting designer Nigel Edwards.
Taking place on a stripped-down empty stage, Use Blue For Night turns the theatre itself into something between a toy box and a basement workshop.
Assembling a show from a bare glossary of theatrical essentials the piece sees twenty five performers slip and slide between the job of acting and that of stagehands as they tinker and toil with the invention of theatrical effects and stage devices.
Burning through entrances and exits, crowd scenes, spot-lit solos, loud music, silences, slow fades and blackouts, Use Blue For Night is about creating the right conditions for the perfect theatrical moment; the moment when simple stage directions are transformed into a kind of magic; the moment when stuff starts to happen.
Cathy Naden is a founder member of Forced Entertainment and has devised and performed with the company since 1984 as well as pursuing her own projects as a performer and as a writer in other contexts. Described by The Guardian as '
